 Neo Rauch combines the German style of social realism with elements of surrealism. As in most socio-realist works, his characters are typically involved in some great struggle. But in his work an awkwardness and uneasiness eclipse typical expressions of determination. The struggle itself, including the reason for it, is kept vague.
